Printed decorative paper is a kind of special industrial paper. It is made of plain base paper and water printing ink. The paper is widely used on the top layer of the wood-based panel like fiberboard, particleboard, and plywood. When people buy the printed decorative paper, the first glance will be the surface. Today I will introduce some methods to judge the quality of printed decor paper from the appearance.

1. Color Difference

Generally, before doing the mass production, the printed decor paper supplier may provide the sample color for the customer to confirm. The color difference refers to the color variation between the sample and the final goods or between different batches of goods. How to judge whether the color difference is acceptable?

1.1 Naked eye cannot see the obvious difference.
1.2 No visible difference under the standard light source

When choosing the color from the same place of the printed paper, then impregnated them with the melamine-formaldehyde resin and pressed the melamine paper onto the wooden board, if the surface has no obvious color difference under the standard light resource (D65, D50, TL84), that is to say, it is the color difference of this decorative paper is in good condition. On the opposite, we will think the quality is not good.

2. Texture Clearance

The printed decor paper design is decided by the rotogravure printing cylinder. Generally, we need to use 2-5 sets of cylinders to print one design. Only when all the cylinders are well-matched, the final printed paper design can show a clear and bright texture clearance. For good quality decor paper for furniture, the surface of wood grain, stone grain, marble grain, etc is very clear and glossy.

3. Missing print & Missing Dots

In the printing process, the ink in the cylinder net cannot transfer to the decor base paper, so some of the decor paper designs will be missed. This kind of missing print may cause the decorative paper surface to appear a lot of small dots of the base paper.

4. Stain & Blade Streaks

Because of the jumping or the unstable swings of the ink doctor blade, some of the ink may leave in the cylinder. These extra printing ink will transfer to the decorative paper surface and come into strips of printing marks. We call this kind of printing mark blade streaks.

What’s more, because the base paper stain or the workshop is not clean, there will be a lot of other kinds of stains that may occur on the printed paper surface.

For the high-quality decorative paper, any kind of stain, blade streaks, doctor blade marks is not allowed.

5. Wrinkle & Crease

5.1 Wrinkle

Wrinkle usually refers to the surface of printing decorative printed paper which is out of flatness. Generally, if this kind of unflatness has no influence on the decorative paper impregnation or can be disappeared after the lamination, then it is acceptable. On the opposite, wrinkle is not allowed.

5.2 Crease

Crease means the folded part of the decorative paper. Generally, this folded part cannot disappear after impregnating the decor paper and even laminating it on the wooden furniture board. The crease has a big influence on the usage and the decoration effect, so it is not allowed.

6. Width Variation

After the decor paper printing, there may have some distance between the real width of the full design and the designed width. If the width variation is not less than or not more than 3mm, it is acceptable. If it is out of the 3mm width variation, we will mark the printed paper to defect products.

7. Reel End Planarity

The reel end planarity refers to the variation rate between two ends of the decor paper roll and the datum end. A good quality printed paper roll 3mm variation rate.

8. Torn off edges

When the edge of the decorative paper roll has defect or split, the paper is easy to break in the melamine impregnation procedure. It will have a big influence on melamine decorative paper production. Therefore, torn offer edges or split edges are not available for both the decor base paper and decor printed paper.

There are many methods to judge the quality of the printed decorative paper by naked eyes or tools from the outlook, but no matter how many ways we can use, what the buyer and the user want is good quality products.
